Womens boots were originally designed for protection from the elements but these days they have become more of a fashion statement. They can be made of a single closely-stitched piece (of leather, rubber, etc) to prevent the entry of water, mud or dirt through the gaps left between laces and tongue in other types of shoes. Some women's boots are made from fine leather while cheaper styles may come in vinyl or even denim.
